Troubleshooting - What to do when your fan Wobbles!

If your fan is whirling faster and faster with a scarey shaking routine like it is going to fly off its mounting and come whirling around towards you, your fan IS unbalanced. This can be a dangerous but mostly annoying occurance. Follow the steps below to learn how you can balance your fan and get a good nights sleep.

Step 1 - Balancing Your Fan
Examine Your Fan. Your fan could be unbalanced because of a loose or bent blade. You will need to physically examine each blade and the structural integrity of your fan in order to determine if this is your problem.

Step 2 - Balancing Your Fan
Balance Kit. If you do not still have the balance kit provided with your fan upon purchase, you may need to purchase a balancing kit for your ceiling fan. Essentially, a balancing kit is made up of a clip and a selection of weights.

Step 3 - Balancing Your Fan
How to Use a Balance Kit. If you still have the original instructions that came with your fan, refer the them before using your balancing kit. Most balance kits consist of weights and clips. Using the kit, it is becomes a 'trial and error' process to determine where your fan is unbalanced. The weight(s) (and clip) will be used to correct the imbalance. First, make sure your fan is not running. Next, you will start with one fan blade at a time and add a weight and clip to the blade. Then you will turn the fan on (be sure to move away from the fan before turning the fan on. If the wobbling has lessened or subsided you have fixed the problem and you will permanatly attach the weight to the blade (most weights have an adhesive on one side). If the fan still wobbles you will need to move on to the next blade and repeat the process. This is basically a 'trial and error' procedure.

Troubleshooting - What to Do When Your Fan is Making Noises!
Unfortunately, the most common reasons for a fan to make noise is because it is a low quality fan with a thin motor housing and "cheap" parts. Many times, the parts will come loose inside the motor and the cost to fix the problem would be more expensive than to replace the fan. The good news is that most fans do come with a Manufacturer's Motor Warranty. If you still have your paperwork you can contact the manufacturer direct and they will (in many cases) send out a repairman or send a new part for your fan. However, with most "cheap" fans, this will be only the first of many problems and "noises" to come. Your best bet is to buy a better quality brand name fan with a lifetime or lengthy warranty. Rest assured, Fanworks carries only the top quality fans on the market today and at great prices!

Another common reason for a fan to make noise is that it was put together or installed improperly. If you have purchased a good quality fan and it is making noise it is most likely that the parts are loose or not put together according to the instructions. You will need to take the fan down and possibly apart to check that all parts are tight. You may want to call an electrician or handyman to do this for you. Also, be sure to check our page on "Installing a Ceiling Fan" to brush up on putting the fan back up properly.

Lastly, the only other common reason for a fan to make noise, considering it is none of the above reasons, is that you have some sort of electrical short or have installed a wall switch, remote or wall control improperly. If this is the case, your fan may not be receiving enough energy or too much electrical flow to the motor causing it to either burn out or not get enough electrical flow to the fan. Again, you will need to check with a professional and check the wiring of your fan.
